In recent weeks, rumors have been circulating that stacked battery technology will be used in the upcoming Galaxy S24 series and even the anticipated Apple iPhone 15 series. Traditionally used in the electric vehicle industry, this new technology offers many advantages that can greatly improve the battery life of smartphones.

What is Stacked Battery Technology?

Stacked battery charging is a new battery technology developed for smartphones. This technology is designed to increase battery capacities without increasing the physical size of smartphones. For this, it uses battery cells stacked on top of each other, not side by side.

Stacked battery charging has multiple benefits. First, it increases battery capacity in a compact space, a critical factor in smartphones; so users can expect long battery life without sacrificing device size. Second, stacked battery charging allows multiple battery cells to be charged simultaneously, resulting in faster charging, reducing charging time.

The Samsung Galaxy S24 is said to be one of the first smartphones to use stacked battery charging. The phone is estimated to have a 5,000mAh battery, which means a significantly larger battery than the one in the current Galaxy S23. But what’s more intriguing than the capacity is that the stacked battery technology manages to keep the physical size of the device the same.

Besides the Galaxy S24, other smartphones that are said to include stacked battery charging include the iPhone 15.

How is Stacked Battery Technology Different from Current Used Battery Technology?

Wrapped battery technology is the traditional manufacturing method of battery cells. In this process, the positive and negative electrodes are looped around each other. While this approach is simple and cost effective, it has some limitations. One of these limitations is the possibility of erratic internal stress in the battery cell, which can lead to a risk of premature failure.

Stacked battery technology is the production of battery cells with a modern approach. Positive and negative electrodes are created by stacking layer upon layer. This creates a more homogeneous internal structure, increasing performance and longevity. Stacked battery technology is also space efficient, allowing higher energy density in battery cells compared to wrapped battery technology.

Benefits of stacked battery charging:

  • Longer battery life: Stacked battery charging can increase smartphone battery capacity by up to 50%. This allows users to charge for longer periods without sacrificing device size.
  • Faster charging times: Stacked battery charging offers faster charging. Multiple battery cells can be charged simultaneously, reducing the total charging time.
  • Smaller form factor: Stacked battery charging enables smaller smartphones without sacrificing battery life. Multiple battery cells can be combined, thus saving space.

Disadvantages of stacked battery charging:

  • Cost: Stacked battery charging is more expensive than conventional battery technology. Precise assembly and alignment of multiple battery cells increases manufacturing costs.
  • Security: Improper management of the stacked battery charge can pose a safety risk. If batteries are not properly cooled, they can overheat and cause a fire.
  • Reliability: Stacked battery charging is a relatively new technology and its long-term performance is still uncertain due to limited data from smartphone usage.

Samsung is allegedly planning to use Stacked Battery technology in the Galaxy S24 series.

According to RGcloudS leaker, Samsung plans to use stacked battery technology in the upcoming Galaxy S24+ and Galaxy S24 Ultra models. The same person states that Apple’s iPhone 15 series will also adopt stacked batteries. However, due to limited production, it is stated that this feature may only be available on the Galaxy S24 Ultra or both models.

Official confirmation on charging capabilities is still pending, but the Galaxy S24 is expected to retain 25W fast charging. Also, the Galaxy S24 Ultra is said to include cooling gel inside the stacked batteries. Samsung is reportedly conducting tests to determine which models will benefit from this battery technology.

All in all, stacked battery charging is a promising new battery technology that is potentially revolutionary in powering smartphones. Allows higher battery capacity in a smaller space, thus longer battery life and can offer faster charging times. However, some challenges still need to be resolved, such as battery cell technology and thermal management.
